Óscar Peñarroya was born in Barcelona in 1974. After a year of physics studies at university, he decided to give it up in order to devote himself entirely to music. He got his degree in composition and orchestration and studied piano, double-bass, singing, choir conducting and film scoring among others.
He is a foundational member of the Catalan musical theatre company L’Oca Underground, with whom he has collaborated as a performer, composer, orchestrator and musical director. He wrote the music for L’apassionant carrera artística de Marta Gelabert, with book by M. Carme Mateu, a musical premiered at Teatre Zorrilla in Badalona in May 2003 and performed in Barcelona in 2004.
He is the composer of the opera El Bosc de Farucàrun, also with book by M. Carme Mateu. This work won the second edition of the Contest “Òpera per a Secundària” (opera for high school) organised by Institut Municipal d’Educació, Gran Teatre del Liceu, Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona and Teatre Lliure. This opera was premiered at Teatre Lliure (Fabià Puigserver) in April 2004.
